Coquet Island Boat Trip

Coquet Island Boat Trip. Sunday 28th May 2017

Nine intrepid adventurers assembled at Amble Harbour for our 6 pm sailing to and around Coquet Island. Our skipper Dave Gray and his daughter who own and run 'Puffin Cruises' welcomed us aboard our vessel a restored 41ft Watson Class RNLI lifeboat. We slipped our moorings and headed out into the grey, cold but thankfully, calm North Sea.

On our voyage Dave provided us with a running commentary on the wide variety of seabirds we saw, including rare Roseate Turns, Common Turns, Sandwich Turns and Kittiwakes as they swooped, dived, soared and in the case of Puffins, zoomed past inches from the surface of the water.

Dave also gave us a brief history of the island and its association with Amble and the mainland and pointed out the numerous nesting birds and nesting sites as we circumnavigated Coquet. Many inquisitive Grey Seals poked their heads above the waves to observe the gaggle of photographers pointing lenses in their direction, sadly never venturing close enough to capture a descent shot.

After a trip lasting an hour or so we returned to Amble Harbour where Jamie thanked Dave and his daughter for a wonderful experience. We disembarked and the 9 now seasoned "seadog's" become, once more, "landlubbers".
