Simon Drew Studio Tutorial

This Thursday (26th Sept) we welcomed Simon Drew to Cramlington CC. Simon runs the ‘Loud & Flashy’ studio in Ashington.

Simon came to Cramlington to give the members a ‘studio tutorial’ using, in the main, a single light  system with various diffusers, reflectors and attachments  to provide varying lighting styles such as Rembrandt light, to our main model for the evening, our very own Lauren.

Simon commenced the evening with a brief tutorial on the lighting systems he had brought and how they could be best used, positioned and adapted to produce the differing lighting styles popular in  portrait photography. Along with recommendations for initial camera settings to obtain the most pleasing exposure.

The members were then invited to try their hand at ‘studio’ photography using the lighting systems and triggering equipment etc that Simon had demonstrated, with Simon always on hand to give help and advice.

With three lighting setups available and members willing to act as models there was no shortage of opportunities for members to experiment and gain practical ‘hands on’ experience of studio shooting.

I’m sure we will see the fruits of the evening in some of the upcoming club competitions.

I’m sure you will join me in thanking Simon for a most enlightening, informative & very enjoyable evening.

Thank you Simon.

Thanks also to Lauren for being our beautiful, professional and patient  model for the evening.

Julia Robson - Still Life Demonstration (12th Sept)

Tonight Julia showed us the secrets behind her for still life photography including using sample cuts of wall paper or pieces of cloth for backgrounds. Checking second hand book stores for old books (the tattier the better) or better still asking for books that would be thrown out and couldn’t be sold.

Julia also gave some pointers on how to construct a still life composition, use an odd number of items, use natural lighting from a north facing window with a cloth or baking paper on the window to avoid harsh shadows. Use items to tell a story.

Armed with Julia’s pointers the members were given the opportunity to try there new found skills for themselves using props and backdrops Julia and Adam had brought. This opportunity was eagerly taken, with a number of members setting up and photographing their own small still life scenes.

Thank you again to Julia for an informative and enjoyable evening.

Simon Williams – Crest Photography (5th Sept)

Welcome back to everyone for the start of a new season.

Tonight’s guest speaker was Simon Williams from Crest Photography in Bedlington. Simon has over 30 years’ experience as a professional photographer specialising in corporate, VIP, architectural and events photography. Simon presented a range of his recent work and provided a fascinating insight in to the interesting and sometimes hectic life of a professional photographer.

Simon explained the process of a typical photo shoot and the need to identify a different angle or composition to make his photographs stand out from the crowd, combined with the use and control of lighting to produce his unique recognisable style.

Even when he is not working Simon is always looking for an interesting scene and will either snap it with his phone or go back when he has some time to get the shot.

This Thursday is the time to show 'Your Summer Pictures'. Please bring them on a memory stick on the night.  We won't be too strict on the number of images per member but around 10 should suffice.
