4 Way Interclub Print Competition 27/02/20 Tonight Cramlington hosted the 4 Way Print Competition and welcomed members from Gateshead, Gosforth and Morpeth. The competition was judged by George Ledger, (DPAGB, ARPS) who has a number of years’ experience as both a freelance photographer and judge. The prints formed the second half of the 4 Way Competition, the judging of the PDI’s having taken place in December, with the results from tonight’s competition being added to the PDI results to give and overall winner. George provided his comments, both positive and negative, on the ten images entered by each club marking each print out of 30 marks. Congratulations to Vince Allen from Gateshead and Ann Henry from Gosforth for being awarded the maximum 30 points, and to Gosforth Camera Club, the winners of tonight’s print completion. Exchange Visit to North Shields PS
Last evening (18th Feb) we had the pleasure of visiting North Shields PS for our exchange visit. Five members of Cramlington CC had come forward and offered to compile a short presentation with which to show on the night. First up was Colin Livingstone who’s presentation explained how his love of ‘panoramic’ photography had lead him to research ways of making this kind of photography easier and would result in a more satisfactory finished image. This Coin explained was achieved by the purchase of a special tripod mount and sliding bar which enables the ‘nodal point’ of each lens to be ascertained, thus allowing editing software to much more easily ‘stitch’ multiple images together to create the panorama. Colin used both physical demonstration, images and video to show this. Next up was Peter Moody. Peter, as many of you will know is an ardent flower photographer. For his presentation Peter had compiled a collection of PDI images taken from his many trips to garden centres, country houses, botanical gardens and even his own greenhouse and garden. As we have come to expect the images were beautiful, with many we were seeing for the first time. Brian Sidney followed. For many years Brian has been a keen, some may say fanatical, lover of Astro Photography. Brian has visited many parts of the world in his quest to see and capture images of a total solar eclipse. Images he showed tis evening proved him to be successful in this quest. Brian also showed images from this country and abroad of the beautiful Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) and some amazing shots of blazing tailed comets and shooting stars. Alec Cowley presentation was his forte, AV’s. He commenced with a short explanation of how he ‘put together’ a series of images to create an AV, followed by a very short AV visually showing this. Alec’s ‘famous’ aircraft AV followed where Alec’s expertise in this genre was plain to see. Beautiful images of aircraft, great transitions and a dramatic accompanying sound track to add to the visual experience. Last up was Derek Parker. Derek has traveled the world for many years, following his passion for ‘bird photography’. For his presentation Derek had compiled a collection of his favourite mounted prints of some of the beautiful birds he has photographed, many from the Far East and Africa as well as closer to home. The North Shields PS members were told how the prints they were seeing were printed straight from the memory card with no post processing, showing the high level of Derek’s camera skills. Many thanks to David Waters & Bill Fell for their warm welcome help and hospitality and thanks to all the North Shields PS members present who I’m sure enjoyed the show immensely. Pictures all around, Dave & Sheila Coates 13/02/20 Today guest speakers Dave and Sheila Coates displayed a number of their prints from around the UK, Tuscany and North America. Both Dave and Sheila are keen landscape photographers and their prints showed that they have an eye for both composition and light, two essentials for good photography. As well as charting their travels, the prints also showed their transition over the years from film and slides to digital photography with a number of prints produced from scans of slides. The talk started in the UK with images from Yorkshire and the Lake District, some images being of ‘classic’ well known locations and some not so well known but all demonstrating the natural beauty of the area. On a number of occasions Dave and Sheila showed images taken in the same area but minutes apart demonstrating how a scene can be transformed by the rapidly changing light during sunrise or sunset. Highlighting that a few extra minutes spent shooting with changing light can make the difference between a good shot and a great shot. As a short diversion from landscape prints Dave also showed a number of prints of wild orchids most of which could be found in one area while some others could only be found in certain parts of the country. One tip that Dave shared when developing images of flowers to make them stand out in the print – don’t brighten the flower as this could also change the colours instead darken the background. Next we were off to North America, a trip Dave and Sheila like to make every couple of years. Here we were treated to the wonderful scenery of Yosemite and Yellowstone. Once again the prints showed the importance planning ahead to be at the right place at the right time to capture the changing lighting conditions. Next it was back to the UK and a number of limestone pavement and winter snow images showing that sometimes you have to suffer for your art. For one of the images Sheila had to kneel down on the cold, hard and uneven limestone to get the right angle for the tree branches in the foreground to mimic the curve of the hills in the background. Following a brief jump to Tuscany and a number minimalist shots showing how the patterns made by the undulating bright green fields with a single point of interest, a lone tree or farm house, could be used to produce an interesting image, it was off for a final visit to America. When Dave and Sheila got the offer of a photographic trip promising to boldly go where no UK photographer had gone before they jump at the chance. The reward was the opportunity to photograph some outstanding scenery with both Dave and Sheila’s images, taken in the early morning light, definitely having that wow factor. Following the talk a number of prints were displayed allowing members to have a closer look at the images. Thank you to both Dave and Sheila for sharing their images of ‘Places all around’.
