Bob Finlay (President) Chris Crane Cup 2020 This year we are unable to host an evening devoted to the Chris Crane Cup however the images have been judged and there is a winner. The judge for this year’s competition was Campbell McAuley an experiences photographer from North Shields. There were forty two images submitted covering the Chris’s favourite themes; landscapes, engineering and nature. The winning image is “I am king for a reason” by Paul Kidd. Campbell commented on the image “It was a great study of a majestic beast but the way the photographer had decided to crop in close and let the animals face tell the story was excellent. Technically it was very well shot indeed with great composition, nicely processed, super sharp , nice out of focus background and had a title that added to the shot (sometimes they don’t!). He also added that it was a great competition with some outstanding work. It is unfortunate that we were unable to host Campbell for the evening so many thanks to him for all his efforts in reviewing the submissions and to all the members who made submissions. Congratulations to Paul for his winning image, very well done. We hope to be able to show all the images one evening early in next season’s program Iain Chambers PDI Secretary Dear fellow members.
Following the latest Coronavirus advice issued by the government and D.O.H, it is with regret that the committee has taken the difficult decision, with immediate effect, to cancel the program for the rest of the season. The health and welfare of members is paramount and we feel to continue holding meetings would constitute an unacceptable risk to those who maybe more vulnerable. We hope that you understand and agree with the decision the committee has made but we feel we have no other choice or action open to us. It is hoped that at a later date, when this outbreak has run its course, we can hold our presentation evening and AGM. Until then, stay safe and well and we will remain in touch with you all. Thank you The Committee CCC Joe Sheridan
This evening (12th March) we welcomed Joe Sheridan F.D.A, BA (Hons), A.R.P.S and his wife Susan to Cramlington CC. Joe, a professional photographer from Washington is a keen advocate of all genres of photography and was here to give a talk entitled ‘How I See Photography’. Joe had something a little different for us this evening as his presentation consisted of 9 short slideshows with music, each proceeded with a short introduction by Joe as to the reasoning behind each slideshow. His first slideshow was an extremely thought provoking and powerful set of images taken on a visit to Auschwitz. In fact so thought provoking that at the end of the evening the assembled members requested that Joe replay it. The accompanying soundtrack ensured the maximum desired impact on a location that Joe thinks should be visited by all. A commission by the Tyne Theatre followed when Joe was asked to record images of all the victorian aspects of the theatre including decor, architecture and engineering. The theatre still has old wooden pulleys, ropes and block and tackle to assist in scenery and curtain movement. The images Joe captured are available to view as framed prints in an exhibition held within the Tyne Theatre itself. Another slideshow of note was one entitled ‘The Ragged Victorians’ a reenactment group based in Bristol who visited our own Beamish Museum. As the title suggests this group, including children adopt the ‘ragged’ clothing of the very poor and destitute of the Victorian era. Arriving early before the crowds Joe had time to engage with the actors and capture some stunning images. The images were further enhanced by the post editing undertaken by Joe resulting in the finished sepia toned images looking like they could have been taken on a glass plate camera over 100 years ago. Joe has also published some children’s story books and one slideshow entitled ‘The Little People Save The Day’, using little Duplo figures, telling the story of how these little figures came to life to make a sandwich for a little boy shows how it is sometimes good to think ’outside the box’. Permission for the use of the figures in a publication was sort from the manufacturers of Duplo and given. At the end of his presentation Joe stayed to answer questions from the assembled members who then showed their appreciation in the usual way. Joe provided the members with a very entertaining evening for which we offer our thanks. Bob Finlay (President) 3rd Open Print Competition
05/03/20 Tonight we had the results of the 3rd and final Open Print Competition of the season judged by Dave Murrell. Dave is a former member of Durham Photographic Society and a current member of Hartlepool Camera Club. Dave enjoys a wide range of photographic genres including wedding and astro photography. At the beginning of the evening Dave stressed that the comments he would make, as with any judge, were his personal opinions and that members may agree or disagree his decisions. Firstly Dave provided his comments on the mono prints followed by the colour prints providing positive feedback on each print and suggestions where prints could be improved. Tonight’s congratulations go to Pauline Wilson for The Violinist (mono) and to Paul Dunn for Bad Antler Day (colour). At the end of the evening Dave remained at the club and was happy to discuss any of the prints with the members providing further feedback and suggestions. A full list of the prints 'placed' and' highly commended' are shown below.
