Club donation to ‘Daft as a Brush’ Cancer Patient Care. You may remember that our guest speaker on the 8th Feb with a talk entitled ’12” Behind the Lens” was Eric Robertson. Eric requested that in lieu of his fee that evening, would we make a donation to the above mentioned charity. The committee thought that an excellent idea and made a donation of £50 as requested. Tonight (27th Feb) the second round of the 4 Way Interclub Competition was hosted by Gosforth Camera Club & judged by Jane Black ARPS. The subject of this second round was ‘prints ‘with each club submitting 10 prints, giving 40 in total for Jane to judge. The standard as usual was high and Jane explained that she had awarded the maximum 30 points to no less than 4 prints because of that. After the first round of the competition. The PDI round. Cramlington were trailing in 4th place with 247 Points but a strong showing in this the ‘print’ round saw us up to 3rd place. Gosforth Camera Club won both PDI & Print rounds and carried off the trophy which Cramlington CC shared last season. A very well done to Gosforth. With regard to the prints that received the maximum of 30 points, our very own club secretary Colin Livingstone received this accoladed for his print, ’Eagle Owl’. Well Done! Colin. To some this may have proved too much of a challenge as only some 30 images were received as entries but with regard to the old adage, ‘quality not quantity’ this certainly proved the case tonight as both the quality & imaginative approach used by some members made for a exciting & compelling competition. As the rounds progressed, allegiances changed as to which image was the best, until the final round when all agreed the winning image was ‘Wilting’ by Julia Robson. Yesterday (Sunday 12th) was the 2018 NCPF Club Competition held at Clara Vale. Myself, Colin Livingstone, Paul Kidd, Alan Carr & Ian Leask made the trip to support Cramlington CC & hear the results. In the print competition the entry consisted of 18 clubs from the northern region each submitting 20 prints for judging. First place was awarded to Keswick Photographic Society with a score of 238 points. In second place was Durham Photographic Society with 215 points and third place Northallerton Camera Club with 203 points. Many congratulations to Keswick for a worthy victory. Whilst the other placings have not yet been announced Cramlington CC with a score of 195 points put up a fine showing and congratulations and thanks must go to all those members who's prints were chosen to represent the club. We set up three Mini studio's and set to work taking pictures. All our "Models" Lydia Michelson, Louise Brown, Emily King, Megan Campbell and her mum Steph Clough and "Scotswood Slim" aka Brian Lynam. all took part for the first time. I think you will all agree they did a great job for us. The girls brought along a couple of their favourite Disney outfits and the club provided a few more props including a variety of hats, a vintage trumpet and an electric guitar. The members got to work taking pictures with fixed flash set ups and some sets of speed lights on triggers. Lydia posed with a variety of props from Chinese umbrella and electric guitar to a purple hat "as mother of the bride". Emily, Louise and Megan all took turns in the various sets. One of the great things I enjoy about these nights is the way members get together to share ideas to help and inform others in the use of their camera and techniques. A wealth of knowledge was shared last night, from how "not" to use a smoke machine to simple composition of the shot. Everyone I spoke to gave me a big thumbs up and said how keen to do it all again. The 5 Way Open Club PDI Competition was held last evening (8th Feb) at Blyth Photographic Society. The Judge was Dave Ord from Consett. Myself, Paul Kidd, Ian Leask & Richie Curry travelled to Blyth to represent and support Cramlington CC. The scoring was tight and there was no runaway winner with only 12 points separating 1st and 5th places. Although we finished 5th with 250 points we acquitted ourselves admirably and thanks must go to those members who's images were selected to represent the club. Congratulations to Cambois for well deserved win and well done to Blyth for achieving the top scoring image with 30 points going to....'Arctic Tern'. The competition scores are shown below as are Cramlington CC entries. Eric Robertson, 12" behind the Lens. Eric's presentation title is based on Ansel Adam's quote; "The single most important component of a camera is the 12 inches behind it". Originally from Carnoustie Scotland but now settled in the North East. Eric is a former member of Ryton & District Camera Club. He now combines his appreciation of art with photography, His own quote "Half Close Your Eyes" to see the picture and not just the detail within. All in his quest to improve his own photography. He explained Roger Sperry's "split brain" theory, to use your right brain(creative side) to "see" the composition not just the detail within. That as a group, photographers are unique in that they are constantly looking and seeing their environment for the appreciation of others. He went on to explain with the use of images by Caravaggio, Turner, Michael Kenna, Cartier Bresson the "guidelines" of art and their influence to photography. From aerial perspective, the rule of thirds, diagonals and one main subject in your composition. All delivered with humour and anecdotes of his travels. Eric is a frequent visitor to Tibet, and has been travelling and trekking there for over 14 years with his good friend Tom. Sadly no longer his companion. He now travels alone, flying into Lukla airport and setting off from there. Eric showed some of his images of Everest and the grab shots taken during his treks. Some taken with his iphone, from mountain valleys to shadows of Yaks and pots drying in the sun. Eric is a volunteer with the charity "Daft As A Brush" and asked that in lieu of a fee we make a donation. Eric finished with a question session and our members showed their appreciation. Colin Livingstone Secretary Tonight's (1st Feb) meeting proved to be a bit of a mixed bag and slightly disjointed affair.
Billed as ' An opportunity to show members images from the still life & creepy crawly nights' uptake was a tad on the lean side. Members who did take up the challenge showing images ranging from snakes, spiders and geckos to flowers vases and old cameras included Pop Brannon, Adam Burness, Ray Thompson, Paul Dunn & Colin Livingstone. Colin showed how he edited an image of a Rainbow Boa to turn it from ordinary to extraordinary. Jamie Welsh showed a series of sunrise & sunset images. This was followed by an AV entitled 'Guess the Local Landmark'. A series of silhouettes of local landmarks inviting members to guess which, before the true image revealed itself. This was kindly put together and shown by Alec Cowley. Alan Carr showed how an image taken at random with no specific intention developed over a period of time with the addition of other elements and images and copious use of Photoshop layers, developed into a competition winning image. With still a little time left the evening finished with a DVD showing some of the 2017 NCPF Championship winning images.
