Feb 22nd - Exchange Visit to Consett
Last night we had our return exchange visit to Consett & District photographic Society. They gave us a warm welcome and the President Chris Bruce introduced Lauren to the members to a round of applause. Lauren thanked Chris and explained the hazards of using "sat nav" to find your way trying to beat the road works.
First up,
Colin Livingstone who expanded on his search for the history of Newcastle through the medium of photography. Finding old images and returning to take the picture in modern times and then blending the two together with a short history of the buildings.
Jim Meikle followed with a tour of "My Favourite Island" Isle of Skye. A pictorial tour of the island taking in many scenes from Kyle of Lochalsh to Neist Head. showing images of seascapes, "fairy pools" and the McCleod`s Tables taken from Ullinish. With a brief history and anecdotes of his journey.
Paul Murphy gave us a set of images showing the effects of "Light". This was a fine series of his images of sunrise and sunsets on the Northumberland coast when out walking his dogs, Arthur and Dougal. From the sun rising in the south over Blyth Bandstand, the Nacreous clouds over Blyth, and a golden sunset over the River Tyne.
Jamie Welsh also took us on a pictorial tour of his favourite haunts from the west coast of Ireland, the glens of Scotland and back to Whitley Bay. Not forgetting a 5 image stitched panorama of Big Waters. Giving us a taste of his particular viewpoint on the day.
Lauren Clayton produced a display of images taken on our summer walks showing us how she has progressed over the last three years. With anecdotes how members dragged a wreck from the dunes of Hauxley onto the beach as a prop and how she held up the coach in Amalfi to get a spectacular view over the harbour. She commented on her particular take on each one and why she enjoyed each one.
Mark Illingworth, showed us some fine examples of his street photography and his passion for the music scene with images of band members from the "Boiler House Steaner". A collection from the Goodwood Revival and finishing with some of his more creative works "Viral" and "The Mad Mad Hatter"
Alex Cowley closed the show with an AV presentation around the Coast of Northumberland. From a crescendo of crashing waves to the calm waters Embelton Bay and the sandy sculptures left by the receding tides on the beaches.
Many thanks to all of the presenters who gave up their time and also to Consett Photographic Society who looked after so well.

Feb 18th - Animal Escapades
This week we enjoyed the company of Julia Masters and her "family" of animals, "Animal Escapades" supported by her daughter they showed us a variety of creatures, Marti, a veiled chameleon, Callista, meaning 'beautiful one' a royal (ball) python, Sahara is the two year old Bosc monitor and George a Russian Horsefield Tortoise, plus many more.
We had put up some sets for Julia to display her family on and they all behaved very well with the occasional nudge back to their perch or log. The star of the evening was probably Callista the python closely followed by Marti.
Some members even faced their fears and picked up the snakes or spiders Julia had brought.
Our members all had a good time taking pictures and talking to Julia and her daughter about their family. Some members gave help to others in getting their settings right to ensure they got some good shots. Lots of favourable comments after the evening was over from members, so all in all I think we had a good night.
Lauren thanked Julia on behalf of the club and we may see her again some time in the future.

Feb 11th - "Freezing Time" Matt Hale
This Thursday we had the pleasure of Matt Hale's company. He has been a professional photographer for six years, and specialises in urban and scenic landscapes of the North East. As well as being accomplished at wedding, family, newborn and pet photography. He started out by selling his photographs at Tynemouth Market and craft fairs and his business snowballed from there. Matt's business 'Time Freezer Photography' is based in his studio/shop at Royal Quays Outlet Centre, North Shields where he has a wonderful gallery of his work available.
This was the first time that Matt had ever given a talk to a camera club about his love of photography, the inspiration behind his images, and how he developed his business. During his talk, his passion and dedication for his craft really shone through in the quality of his images. He was supported on the night by his partner and newborn baby son who was a little star and who managed to sleep all the way through his daddy's presentation.
The club members had lots of questions for Matt at the end of the talk which he was more than happy to answer.
An enjoyable night was had by all. If you would like to see more Matt's work please look for him on the internet.

Feb 4th - An evening with Neil Atkinson
Tonight we had the pleasure Neil Atkinson's company taking us through 40 years of his life in professional photography.
Neil has pursued many avenues of photography ranging from his early days photographing bands at the city hall with his hand made flash guns, his time spent as a wedding photographer and his 'Moments in Time' tv series.
Neil also talked about his most inspirational photographer such as Storm Thorgerson and Frank Hurley.
Members had may questions to ask Neil throughout the evening which he gladly and enthusiastically answered. He also shared some humorous tales and anecdotes that made us all laugh, and of course he showed us series of wonderful photographs.
In recent years, Neil had turned to teaching photography and photoshop skills through a variety of workshops and also uses photography as a way to help families cope with bereavement.
Overall, a very enjoyable night was had by all and a few members have expressed interest in participating in some of Neil's workshops to learn a few of his tricks of the trade.
I'm sure we will be welcoming Neil back to the club again I the near future.
